Maroondah Business Week 2006

This week Julia and I have been attending some sessions at the Maroondah Business Week 2006. Tonight we went to the RACV Business Networking Function where Robyn Henderson spoke. Robyn gave us some great tips on how to network. The point that particularly spoke to me the most was:

  • Act like the host, not the guest. Essentially this meant that you are actively engaging in conversation with people as if it were you that invited them. Therefore, you’re personally interested in them and their well-being. The example for this that I liked, was finding the “solo” person on their own and actively engaging them. Then, once you’ve made a connection with them, bring other people into the conversation, particularly if they’re “solo” as well or have just arrived.

After this we had a session on home businesses run by Maroondah HomeBiz. I was surprised by how many people run their businesses from home. The cool thing was that nearly everyone doing it was proud and passionate about running their business from home. It made me think a lot.

We met some great people tonight, everyone was really friendly. Julia and I are excited to have exchanged ideas with interesting business people (and those still searching for their own business idea) that we’ll either get to refer business to, use ourselves, or receive business from. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable night.

If you’ve attended a session during the week, please share what you learnt by leaving a comment below.
